B.C. Wildlife Federation Watershed Team
Working to protect, restore, and promote British Columbia’s wetlands and watersheds.
The B.C. Wildlife Federation’s Watershed Team aims to collaborate with conservation organizations and First Nations across British Columbia to protect watersheds and provide on-the-ground restoration, monitoring, maintenance, and education.
From its inception, the keystone of the BCWF’s watershed restoration projects has been engagement with First Nations and Indigenous-led organizations. These programs and projects span many First Nations’ traditional, ancestral, unceded, and contemporary territories.
Core Elements of Our Work

Restoration Projects
The BCWF’s Watershed Team is actively involved in hands-on watershed and habitat restoration, focusing on wetland and stream rehabilitation. Our restoration projects often involve collaboration with various partners, including First Nations communities, environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs), contractors, consultants, and educational institutions, with BCWF sometimes leading and other times supporting.
Our restoration efforts span the province of B.C., often over many years. Typically, our projects include maintenance and monitoring to ensure long-term success well beyond the initial restoration phase.

Conservation Tools
The BCWF Watershed Team is developing and using various innovative conservation tools in partnership with organizations across British Columbia and Canada. Key initiatives include the Wetlands Ecosystem Services Protocol (WESP) for standardizing wetland function assessments, the Canadian National Wetlands Inventory (CNWI) for a comprehensive wetlands database, the Forest and Range Evaluation Program (FREP) for training professionals in wetland assessments for forestry, and the digital guide Wetland Plants of B.C., which details indicator species for wetland classification.

Education Programs
Through our education programs, the BCWF’s Watershed Team is enhancing grassroots, community-driven conservation efforts and promoting watershed health across the province. Education programs like the Wetlands Education Program (WEP) and the Fish Habitat Restoration and Education Program (FHREP) offer educational courses, workshops, and outreach events focused on equipping local communities with the knowledge and tools to better understand and steward their natural environments.
